POSITION SUMMARY Volunteering at the YMCA is a meaningful way to show care for others and contribute to the well-being of children, families, and the broader community. By offering your time and talents, you’ll help foster a supportive environment while gaining opportunities to build relationships, learn new skills, and grow personally. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Volunteer responsibilities vary by department and are based on program needs, operational priorities, and individual interests and skill sets. Examples of potential duties include: 1. Assisting with the planning and execution of community events. 2. Setting up and breaking down equipment, furniture, decorations, and activity materials. 3. Supporting activity stations or facilitating engagement during events. 4. Welcome members, assisting with check-in, and providing general support at the front desk. 5. Helping with administrative tasks such as mailing, data entry, and filing. 6. Assisting with custodial tasks, cleaning, and organizing in support of the maintenance team. 7. Engaging with children in the Kids Zone through storytelling, play, and other activities. REQUIREMENTS 1. Completion of the volunteer application, background check, and required training. 2. A positive attitude, enthusiasm, and dedication to service. 3. Reliability in fulfilling assigned time and task commitments. 4. Business casual attire or YMCA-provided volunteer uniform. 5. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. 6. Adherence to all YMCA policies and procedures. 7. Commitment to the YMCA core values: Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility. 8. Creating a safe and nurturing environment by reporting any suspicious activity or conduct violations. 9. Volunteers must be age 16 or older; those under 16 may participate with parental supervision and support.

YMCA OF GREATER HARTFORD JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Counselor In Training (C.I.T) Reports to: Conference and Retreats Director Revision Date: 01/15/2025 Leadership Level: Leader This is an unpaid volunteer role. The YMCA of Greater Hartford is an association open to all committed to helping people reach their potential in spirit, mind, and body. Our commitment is based on the belief that the purpose of this three-fold development is to live out the values of Caring, Honest, Respect and Responsibility. POSITION SUMMARY: The Counselor in Training or CIT is primarily responsible for the safety and well-being of campers in their cabin and assisting in programs. In addition, the CIT is expected to participate in all CIT programs, activities and training. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Assist Senior Counselor in the guidance and well-being of a group of 10-14 campers 2. Actively participate in the camp program that includes activities with campers, CIT training, service projects and involvement in evening programs with campers 3. Supervise all areas of cabin life, such as morning chores, camper health and safety, and evening activities. 4. Actively participate in other camp responsibilities as given by the camp administration, such as lifeguarding, attendance in individual meetings with CIT Directors, attendance in all-staff meetings. 5. Maintain and upkeep living and program areas with daily cleanings. 6. Adhere to the expectations stated in the CIT Standards of Conduct. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT: • At least 15 years of age • Participation in YMCA Leadership-In-Training Program preferred • Strong desire to work with children and to develop leadership skills • An understanding and acceptance of the purpose and expectations of YMCA • Emotional maturity and moral character, particularly embodiment of the four core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility

Sewing Instructor

Wilson-Gray YMCA Youth & Family Center

The Wilson-Gray YMCA is seeking passionate and creative volunteers to lead a weekly sewing class for teens. This is a great opportunity to share your skills, mentor young people, and support hands-on learning in a welcoming community environment. Position: Volunteer Sewing Class Instructor (Teens) Location: Hartford Schedule: Wednesdays, 3:00–5:00 PM Commitment: Ongoing through September 2026 What You’ll Do: Lead engaging, beginner-to-intermediate sewing classes for teens Teach basic to advancing sewing techniques and safe equipment use Help students complete small projects and build creative confidence Create a supportive, inclusive, and encouraging classroom atmosphere Support Provided: On-site supervision throughout each class Program assistance from branch staff or volunteers Access to classroom space and equipment (details provided during onboarding) Ideal Volunteers: Have sewing experience and enjoy working with teens Are patient, reliable, and encouraging Can commit to a consistent weekly schedule Teaching or mentoring experience is helpful but not required This is a meaningful way to give back, inspire creativity, and help teens develop practical skills they can use for years to come. Thanks to the generosity of the Brandt Foundation, the Greater Hartford YMCA has been given the opportunity to serve 1,000 Hartford Youth free swimming lessons. By becoming a volunteer, you will be able to help underserved youth learn the lifesaving skill of swimming.
